Can the Stradivarius be Reproduced?

　A good instrument is one that lasts a long time, sounds great for a long time, and is loved by people for a long time. Since they are so valuable, they are sold at very high prices. In 2011, a Stradivarius violin sold for 1.27 billion yen at an auction to support reconstruction following the Great East Japan Earthquake, and it became a major topic of conversation in Japan.

　“Stradivarius” is the general name for stringed instruments produced by Mr. Stradivari and his two sons during the 16th and 17th centuries. However, since violins make up the majority of these instruments, the word “Stradivarius” usually refers to violins. The tone is exceptional, and players and listeners alike have been attracted by it for hundreds of years. Numerous people have attempted to reproduce this tone, but almost everything about it, from the material to the manufacturing method, remains a mystery. 

　One of the reasons no one has been able to reproduce the material is that the wood used for these violins does not grow in today’s climate. The Stradivarius’ front board is made of Alpine spruce, which is strong, light, and flexible. Spruce can still be harvested today, but the quality is not sufficient. The Stradivarius lived during the Little Ice Age, a period when the entire earth became colder due to stagnant solar activity. Trees during this period were not able to photosynthesize enough and growth stagnated. This led to a homogenization of the wood’s density and was an optimal quality for making musical instruments. 

　A Swiss research group attempted to replicate this quality by using a fungus to change the condition of wood grown today. The properties of the fungus changed the structure of the wood, making it similar to the material used in the Stradivarius instruments. The violin made from this wood was named “biotech Stradivarius”. Some say that the sound is as good as that of the original. 

　The sound of the Stradivarius continues to fascinate people. I would like to listen to it at least once before I die.

　良い楽器とは、長く持ち、長い間素晴らしい音色を奏で、長い間人々に愛され続けるものだ。それだけ価値のあるものなので、当然超高額で取引される。そんな楽器のうちのひとつ、ストラディバリウスをご存じだろうか。2011年、東日本大震災の復興支援のためのオークションでストラディバリウスのヴァイオリンが12億7000万円で落札され、日本でも大きな話題となった。

　ストラディバリウスは16～17世紀にかけて、イタリアのストラディバリウス父子三人によって製作された弦楽器の総称であるが、ヴァイオリンがその大半を占めているため、通常ストラディバリウスといえばヴァイオリンのことを指す。音色は別格で、演奏家も客もその音色に何百年もの間魅了され続けてきた。幾多の人々がこの音色を再現しようと試みてきたが、材質から製造方法まで、ほぼ全てが謎に包まれたままだそうだ。

　材質を再現できない理由の一つとして、今の気候では材料となる木材が育たないからだということが挙げられている。ストラディバリウスの表板には、丈夫でありながら軽くて柔軟性があるアルプス産のスプルースが用いられている。スプルースは現代でも伐採できるが、これらの品質では不十分なのだ。ストラディバリが生きていた時代は、太陽活動の停滞に伴って地球全体が寒冷化した小氷河期だった。この時代の樹木は十分な光合成ができずに成長が停滞したが、これが要因で木材の密度は均質化し、楽器作りに最適な品質となったのだ。 

　スイスの研究グループがこの品質を再現しようとし、カビを使用して木材の状態を変化させようとした。そのカビは木材の構造を変化させる性質を持っており、当時使われていた材料に近い状態となった。この木材を使用して作られたヴァイオリンを”biotech Stradivarius”と命名した。その音は本家と遜色無いという声もあるようだ。 

　人々を魅了し続けるストラディバリウスの音色、生きているうちに一度は生の演奏を聴いてみたいものだ。
