The largest lake in Japan is Lake Biwa, but do you know what the third largest lake in Japan is? It is Lake Saroma which is located in the Abashiri National Park in Hokkaido. The lake, which is the largest lake in Hokkaido, has an area of about 152㎢.

　Also, it is the largest brackish water lake in Japan. Brackish lakes are lakes that contain some seawater rather than completely fresh water. As you can easily see if you look at a picture of the lake, Lake Saroma is separated from the Sea of Okhotsk by a sandbar and is almost adjacent to the sea. During the Jomon period, this sandbar did not yet exist, and the lake was actually a bay of the Sea of Okhotsk. Around this sandbar, there are grasslands with beautiful flowers and unique vegetation that can be observed in their natural state where no human intervention has occurred.

　The lake is also a famous sightseeing place, attracting many visitors every year. Visitors can see the flowers while touring the meadow by bicycle or on foot, relax on a sightseeing boat, or watch the beautiful sunset in the evening. In addition, this is a perfect place for animal lovers, as they can see white-tailed eagles, a protected species, and seals during the winter months. The area is also famous for its scallops and oysters, which can be grilled or eaten fresh, so it is ideal for gourmets, too.

　また、汽水湖としては日本最大である。汽水湖とは、水が完全な淡水ではなく、海水を含んでいる湖のことだ。湖の写真を見てもらえばすぐにわかることだが、サロマ湖はオホーツク海と一本の砂州によって隔てられているのみで、海とほとんど隣り合わせなのだ。縄文時代にはこの砂州がまだ存在しておらず、オホーツク海のひとつの湾だった。この砂州の周辺には、人の手が加わっていない自然な状態で綺麗な花が咲く草原があり、独特な植生を観察することができる。

　この湖は観光地としても有名で、毎年多くの観光客が訪れる。草原の中を自転車や徒歩で巡りながら花を見たり、遊覧船に乗ってくつろいだり、夕方には美しい夕日を眺めることもできる。天然記念物のオジロワシや、冬季にはアザラシもやってくるので、動物が好きな人にはピッタリな場所だろう。また、ここはホタテ貝やカキの養殖でも有名で、新鮮なまま焼いて食べることもできる。グルメな人にもうってつけだ。

　最寄りの女満別空港は、羽田空港からわずか2時間のフライトで到着する。涼みたい人、冬ならではの自然を体験したい人、どちらにもおすすめの場所だ。
