A Pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela

　　　There are three major Christian pilgrimage sites. One is the Vatican City, and another is the Old City of Jerusalem, but do you know what the other one is? It is Santiago de Compostela, a city located in Garcia, Spain. This old town was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1985. The pilgrimage route from France across the Pyrenees to this city was also registered as a World Heritage Site in 1998. It is said that the pilgrimage by Christians began because of the legend that the tomb of St. James, one of the 12 apostles of Jesus, had been found here. The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela was built right at the location of this tomb and is visited by tens of thousands of people every year as it is the final destination of the pilgrimage route.

　　　If you want to embark on a trip to this place, get yourself a scallop shell first. The European scallop is the symbol of the pilgrimage, and it is customary to wear a scallop around your neck or put it on your luggage to identify yourself as a pilgrim. Also, there are many scallop symbols along the pilgrimage route, so if you follow them, you will reach the destination without getting lost. The reason why scallops are used as a symbol for the pilgrimage has yet to be determined. However, it is believed to be either because pilgrims used to take them home as souvenirs, or because a large number of scallops were found attached to the ship that carried the body of St. James.
